Here at Las Orquideas, we use a combination of local fruits and vegetables with traditional spices to recreate the food that is eaten in the home of every mestizo community in Belize. Day to day the menu differs slightly but just about anything can be made to order when asked or called ahead!
Local Food DescriptionChimole: A traditional recipe made with a local spice, Black Recado, along with root vegetables and chicken. Served with white rice and hard boiled egg.
Escebeche: Another traditional soup recipe! Mainly onion based, this tangy, spicy soup is spiced with oregano and pepper. Includes carrots and chicken with a side of rice with corn tortilla. Empanadas: A handmade corn dough filled with spiced shredded chicken. The crispy exterior makes for a mouthwatering savory center. Fried Chicken: Spoken as is in english within Belize. Always includes french fries and a salad of cabbage and carrots Salbutes, Garnachas, Tostadas: These three similar meals are a different combination of shredded chicken, vegetable, bean and cheese topping a crispy corn tortilla. Rice and Beans: A common dish eaten either as a side or with stewed chicken, fried plantain and ensalada. Tamales: Cooked fresh daily, this very traditional meal consists of corn, tomato sauce and chicken wrapped up and cooked in a banana leaf.
